Lebanese President General Joseph Aoun and French President Emmanuel Macron agreed in a phone call on March 1 to postpone the international conference in Paris, originally scheduled for March 5, which aimed to support Lebanon’s security forces and advance disarmament of non-state armed groups.

The leaders cited the absence of appropriate conditions to hold the event amid escalating regional tensions following the U.S.-Israel-Iran war and the killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Both Aoun and Macron stressed that the current regional developments highlight the importance of preserving Lebanon’s stability, supporting its legitimate institutions, and ensuring the full restoration of the country’s sovereignty.

The international conference in Paris, originally scheduled for March 5, was aimed at strengthening Lebanon’s security institutions, the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) and Internal Security Forces (ISF), while also addressing broader goals of disarmament, consolidating state authority, and limiting the influence of non-state armed groups.

The event sought to rally international support to bolster Lebanon’s stability amid ongoing political, economic, and regional challenges.
